Staying Cool While Working Out

Summertime is the perfect time to get in shape and enjoy the great outdoors. But in Texas, it is good to be mindful of the heat and humidity. Rates of heat stroke, exposure, and heat exhaustion spike between June and August - with many of these incidences requiring trips to the ER. Here are some things to consider to stay athletically safe during the hot weather:

  • Give yourself time to get used to it. If you are a new transplant to the area, give yourself adequate time to acclimate to the different weather. And even if you aren't new to the area, it can take several days to several weeks to get use to rising temperatures and increases in humidity.  Don't push your outdoor exercise routine if you see it lagging; that is an early sign that your body gives you to tell you to slow down and take it easy until you have acclimated to the weather changes.
  • Make it earlier or later.  Consider the time of day that you are working out very carefully. Although we all want a nice bronzed body, choosing a tan over safety is generally a bad idea.  Exercise in the early morning or evening hours when the sun is down is the best time of day to work out, as temperatures are typically cooler at those times.  Staying away from those peak 'sunshine hours' can make or break your workout, and your health.
  • Hydrate! Make sure that you are drinking before, during, and after your workout! The humidity in the air will not stop dehydration from occurring. Drink water or beverages with sodium and electrolytes to help retain those fluid levels.
  • Dress Appropriately. breathable fabric and light colored clothing will ensure that you are not getting overheated from your attire.
  • Plan Ahead Of Time. Plan your route ahead of time and, if the sun is high in the sky, try choosing a path that has lots of tree cover and water fountains along the way, if possible. Try to stay in relatively populated areas, just in case you need help on your workout.
  • Listen to Your Body. You always want to stop any type of activity if you are experiencing nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, or the chills.  This can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

The summer is beckoning you to come and enjoy it; but be smart while playing hard. Remember to play safe!
